Lime Saddle Marina 5/05/02 - The weatherperson
said that this weekend would be a prelude to summer.
The morning was indeed a cloudless starlit beginning
to a great day. My brother and nephew were at my house
bright eyed and ready for an on-time departure. We
hit the road right at 3:00 a.m for the 1½ hour
drive to Lime Saddle Marina.
We pulled into the parking lot to
an awaiting crowd of bass fishermen. Seems that all
were anxious and ready to get fishing. Thanks to Garry
Knox for having the Angler's Choice trailer on hand
for the sign-ups. Sacramento Pro Tackle had bags of
50 count Magic Worms for the anglers that signed up
for the event. Thanks to Dennis of Sacramento Pro
Tackle for his continued support of the California
Foothill Division. Once we had all 28 teams on the
books we were ready for blast off. Team number ONE
had been drawn as the first team out. It was 5:55
a.m. and safe light when I sent the teams off for
the days event. We would see everyone back on the
docks of Lime Saddle Marina at 3:00 p.m. for a dockside
weigh-in.
My brother, Dan, my nephew, Jerame
and I headed out for a bit of fishing. We headed upstream
from Lime Saddle Marina. Just outside the 5-mph buoys
was a floating mass of driftwood. I decide to throw
a buzzbait in and around this mass. We had some very
good blowups and tail slaps but no takers. We also
tossed some jerkbaits but no success. We then headed
back to the marina to turn in the collected launch
fees. The staff at Lime Saddle is always friendly
and accommodating. Thanks to the staff and General
Manager Gail Thacker for their help and assistance.
We headed back to the waters of Lake
Oroville to hunt for our targeted prey, BASS! We ended
up catching 20 bass, our 5 best would have went about
8 pounds. We used Speed Traps and RoboWorm FX series
baits on 1/8 ounce dartheads. Those Oroville bass
LOVE the RoboWorm FX series baits in the Baby Bass,
Arrons Magic II and AYU colors. You gotta have a few
bags of these when you're on Lake Oroville!
Time for weigh-in! Our dockside weigh-in
went smooth as the teams weighed in. Once finished,
they would make a big circle and release the fish
away from the docks on their way to trailering their
boats. We were ready and waiting when the first team
of Mike Hanson and John Dryden came to the scales
with a 7-pound limit at 2:30. Young Johnathon Simlick,
fishing with his Dad John, came to the scales with
a 6.01-pound limit. Seems as though he outfished Dad
by contributing three of the five fish in their limit.
Although one team did show up an hour late for weigh-in,
everyone else was right on time.
With weigh-in completed, it was up
to the Angler's Choice trailer for the awards. Steve
Geffs and Kelly Owens were the top team this Sunday.
Their 12.09 limit anchored by a 4.59 largemouth netted
them the 1st place check of $1145.00 along with BassWidow
/ Craw-Cane sponsored plaques. Steve received $270,
a Kistler Custom Rod and a BassWidow / Craw-Cane sponsored
plaque for Big Bass of the event. Less than a pound
behind was Steve Thurmon and Terry Honkanen with an
11.27 limit that included 2nd Big Bass of the event
a 3.29 Spotted bass. They took home $570 and BassWidow
/ Craw-Cane sponsored palques for 2nd place. Steve
was awarded a Tactical Assault Revolver rod for 2nd
Big Bass. Marcel Colin and Troy Schroeder's 10.23
limit was good enough for 3rd place, $430 and BassWidow
/ Craw-Cane sponsored palques. A 4th place 10.12 limit
netted Ron Diacon and Braden Youngblood $330.00 and
BassWidow / Craw-Cane sponsored plaques. Dave Parker,
fishing by himself this event, took 5th place with
a 9.87 limit and received a check for $275. Our one
spot out of the money award of $100 went to John McClellan
and Rich Forhan. The 3rd Big Bass award of an EZ-Cul-RZ
floating rope system went to Pat Dilling for his 2.98
Spotted bass. Pat Dilling and his partner Wayne Howenstine
each received $25 gift certificates from Just Fishin',
courtesy of David Yates, and a jar of Craw-Cane for
2nd spot out of the money.
The next and last event of the California
Foothill Division will be held on the California Delta
out of Big Break Marina June 23rd. This will be a
six hour event due to the time of year. So break out
those Snag Proof frogs and Power Pro line. Should
be some BIG fish brought to the scales. Maybe someone
will best Randy Marshall's 9.14 Folsom Lake lunker
and take the Line-X Big Bass of the Year award away
from him. Which is a Line-X spray-on bedliner courtesy
of Jesse Angeles at Line-X of Sacramento.
