The alarm goes off and I give it a swat. Three
a.m., "Ahhh, I get to take my time getting up!"
I thought. Staying at the Best Value Inn in Oroville was a
GREAT idea. Just a few blocks away from Oroville Outdoors
meant I got to get an extra hour of sleep. I didn't have to
drive from Sacramento and get up at "Before the Rooster
crows"! I could here the wind blowing outside. The weather
guys may have been correct saying there would be gale force
winds today. I was keeping my fingers crossed!
As the teams came in to register at Oroville
Outdoors, they had the chance to roam the aisles looking
for that special or secret bait that would catch the kicker
bass. Brent Deaner had the coffee on and was waiting for
the donut shop to open to get donuts. Upon registering the
anglers received full packs of Yamamoto products and RoboWorm
FX series 4" sculpin in Aaron Magic along with a California
Tackle Co. Beanie Bear. With the plastics the anglers received,
we were sure they'd have something that would catch a fish
or two!
The teams raced off into the choppy waters
of Lake Oroville at 05:45. And there was PLENTY of water.
With the late winter weather we'd been getting Lake Oroville
was FULL! Lake Oroville has not been this full in years,
talk about new shoreline with flooded brush! Fishing was
bound to be good. We'd found out when these guys returned
at 3:00 and 3:15 p.m. at the docks of Bidwell Marina for
the weigh-in. Ron Herrin, tournament staff member, would
meet the arriving teams at the 5-mph buoys at the entrance
of Bidwell Canyon for check-in. Once checked-in there was
still about a 10 minute idle to the docks at Bidwell Marina.
The teams come rolling in right on time.
The average limit was going around 7½ pounds with
a few in the 6's and 9's. Those two young brothers that
fly around lake in a Triton bass boat came to the scales.
R.J. and Michael Bennett's limit weighed in at 10.01. R.J.
was sure that their limit would not hold through the rest
of the weigh-in. Once all was tallied and all teams accounted
for, the Bennett Boys limit held up to the end! They earned
a $1310, a $1,000 bass Cat Bonus Bucks certificate and 84
Lumber sponsored plaques! Plus this was there second WIN
in the California Foothills Division! Michael also received
a SP 40 100 ball bearing Lifetime warrented California Tackle
reel, a team set of EZ-Cul-RZ and a jar of Craw-Cane the
powdered fish attractant you add to your bag of plastics.
Not far behind them with a 9.36 limit was another team of
brothers. Chris and Matt Martin wrapped up second place
and BIG BASS of the event. The received checks totaling
$975 for 2nd and Big Bass along with 84 Lumber sponsored
plaques. Larry Tigget and Wayne Lucas brought in 5 fish
that tipped the scales to 9.25. That was good for 3rd place,
$535 and 84 Lumber sponsored plaques. Fourth place, $430
and $87 in option money and 84 Lumber plaques went to Ken
Douglas and Mark Stringer for their 8.93 limit. Eric Parra
and Cliff King had 5th place in the net for an 8.88 limit
which got them $355, $87 in option money and 84 lumber plaques.
Mike VanWagner and Mike Moad's 8.61 limit got them a check
for $270. Our Lucky SOB (Son of a Bass) one spot out of
the money $120 option went to Eddie Fletcher and Don Stone
for a 8.59 limit. Our last 3X3 option of $87 went to Oscar
Sarnecki and Armando Palacias for an 8.12 limit they weighed
in. In this event EVERY team weighed in a limit of fish.
Once the awards, checks and plaques were
given, we then had a few sponsor items that needed to be
given away. We had a bit of everything! David Yates of Just
Fishin donated two $25 gift certificates. Sunny Lampe of
Sunny's Electric Marine donated a trolling motor gift certificate
valued at $125. Brent Deaner of Oroville Outdoors donated
two assortment bags of tackle valued at $50 each. We also
had a couple of Lifetime replacement warranted Calif. Tackle
Company reels a team set of EZ-Cul-RZ and a few jars of
Craw-Cane that were given to the anglers that stayed for
the awards. Looks like it pays to stay.
I would like to thank my staff, Dan Davis,
