Virginia's Chickahominy River, winding near
historic colonial Williamsburg was the 5th qualifying stop
on the Angler's Choice DelMarVa
schedule on July 20th. 43 teams competed in this event.
The "Chick" has always seen a lighter-than-normal
level of participation whether it be due to the extended
travel time for some of our northernmost teams or the Chickahominy's
reputation for being a tough fishery.
The Chickahominy River empties into the famed James River
in Richmond, and has a swift tidal current. Many teams chose
to play this trump card in their fishing strategy, seeking
to change locations quickly and often to optimize their
time for the best fishing conditions. Many teams chose to
flip jigs around the cypress trees while others opted to
work floating worms and topwaters around pads and shoreline
grass. Others made the long run south to the James River
and her tributaries to cast crankbaits to channel drops
and blowdowns. A handful of teams elected to lock through
into Chickahominy Lake, where Scum Frogs seemed to fool
larger bass from under the grass mats.
At the 3:00PM weigh-in, all teams but one returned on time
except for one, who was left high and dry on a sand bar
in the Appomattox River and did not return until 7:00PM
when a welcome incoming tide came to their rescue.
The Chick is known for small, slender bass that barely average
a pound. A total of 126 largemouth bass were carried to
the scales with a total weight of 201.59 pounds for a 1
1/2 pound average. In all, a total of 13 5-bass limits were
captured.
In 5th place, with a total weight of 9.07 pounds was the
team of Dee Rose and Ron Jackson from Virginia. They were
awarded $430 dollars for their day of fishing. Good job,
guys!
Finishing in 4th place is the hottest team on the DelMarVa
Trail at the moment. Fresh off their victory last month
on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, Maryland's Jerry Pyles and
Charlie Garst were able to catch 4 largemouth that totaled
10.14 pounds. One more 12" bass would have probably
earned them back-to-back victories. They were presented
$520 and moved into 3rd place in the EXTREMELY tight Angler's
of the Year race.
Our 3rd place finishers at the Chick are also our current
leaders in the AOY competition. Brian Trieschman and Wendell
Potter from central Maryland are gallantly defending their
stronghold on the lead, and finishing 3rd in this event
was a neccesity for them. Brian and Wendell brought a beautiful
5-bass limit to the weigh-in pavillion weighing 10.31 pounds.
In addition to walnut plaques, they earned a total of $650.
2nd place was claimed by Keith Ridgely and Tom Pohuski,
also from Maryland. Hot on the heels of the overall leaders,
Keith and Tom edged ever so closer to the AOY lead with
a big bag of bass that totaled 10.97 pounds. The tournament
lunker was also in the livewell of Keith and Tom. Though
not a heavyweight on most waters, this 3.46 largemouth is
a lunker on the Chick and fell victim to a Big Mouth spinnerbait.
It was worth $430, and sweetened their payday as they also
won $860 for their 2nd place finish.
Our Champion was pulling double duty, as his partner was
unable to attend this event. Kevin McCauley, who lives in
New Jersey, made his partner, Joe Lanzelotte proud as he
brought the winning weight to the scales just after 3:00.
Kevin's limit consisted of 5 healthy 2 to 2 1/2 pound largemouth
bass which weighed 11.16 pounds. He caught most of his bass
on worms fishing the many pads on the river as well as some
chunk rock he had located. Always a threat on the tidal
rivers we fish, Kevin was presented the champions plaques,
$1460, and a $1000 Bass Cat Bonus Bucks certificate for
a great payday! In addition, Kevin's efforts moved he and
Joe into 8th place in the AOY challenge. Congratulations,
Kevin!
Special thanks go out to Gene and Carol Hoffmeyer at River's
Rest Marina for allowing us to use their facility, and also
to many of our members who helped out, as we were short
staffed at this event. They include Randy Knopp, Mike Rhodes,
Fred Knopp, Sean Peddicord, and Forest Honeywell who somehow
maintains the weigh-in slips AND his sanity. Of course,
Bruce Freeman, our Assistant Director, always goes above
and beyond the call of duty to not only set up the weigh-in,
but keeps everything running smoothly.
Our next DelMarVa tournament trail stop is on Maryland's
beautiful Eastern Shore as we compete on the Nanticoke River
out of Cherry Beach Ramp August 24th.
DelMarVa tournament sponsors include Extreme Offshore Marine,
The Fishin' Shop, Edgewood Western Auto, Northern Neck Chevrolet/Pontiac,
Jenkins Boat Sales, X-Citer Baits, Venom Lures, Luhr-Jensen,
Fallston Western Auto, and Eat em' Up Baits.
