Hurricane Isabel did her best to prevent the final 2003 Qualifying Tournament from taking place as she left most of the Potomac in shambles. Originally scheduled for September 21, just days after Isabel touched down, the shores of the mighty Potomac River were in no shape to hold a tournament. State Parks, marina's, and boat ramps up and down the Maryland and Virginia sides of the Potomac were hit hard and destroyed, with many closed for the remainder of 2003. Other tournaments on the river were forced to change to other bodies of water, but the rangers and volunteers at Maryland's Smallwood State Park worked all week to have the facility ready for us on Sunday.

The Potomac was full of entire trees, docks, construction material, and a myriad of other floating debris. One of the 35 teams in this event reported dodging a refrigerator near Marshall Hall as they wove their way north toward Washington DC.
All teams were back to the ramp safely and amazingly with their lower units intact in time for the 3:00PM weigh-in.

Surprisingly, despite the wind, water clarity (or lack there-of), and overall tough conditions, the largemouth bass that inhabit the Potomac River were in a feeding mode. In all, 22 5-bass limits were brought to the scales as teams vied for the final qualifying positions for the upcoming Regional Championship on Kentucky Lake.
In 5th place was Steve Davis, ½ of the Chuck Solley/Steve Davis team. Steve was solo today and still managed to put 5 bass in the boat that weighed 11.12 pounds and cashed a $350 check. Steve is a Gary Yamamoto "junkie" and caught all of his fish on Senkos.

4th place belonged to former DelMarVa Angler's of the Year Mike Hoskings and David Williams. Mike and David weighed 5 bass that totaled 11.35 pounds and earned $440.

Our 3rd place finishers were only able to compete in 4 DelMarVa events this year, but were able to cash in 3 of the 4. The solid team of Jim Urbanski and Moo Bae had a nice limit of bass weighing 11.81 pounds and earned plaques and checks totaling $550.

Pennsylvania's Gary Leranian and Ricky Kemmerer only managed to catch 3 bass but they were HAMMERS!! Their 3 bass weighed 11.92 pounds and were worth
$670. They also had big bass of the tournament at 4.89 pounds which paid them an additional $350. Gary and Ricky have been one of the steadiest teams on the trail this year and Kentucky Lake should have them feeling right at home.

Our Champions today also happen to be our outgoing Angler's of the Year. In order to remind us all of just how they got there last year, Virginia's Don Jones and Chuck Dent smoked the field with a limit of post-hurricane bass that pushed the scales down to 15.33 pounds. For their victory, this classy duo was awarded plaques, a Bass Cat Bonus Bucks certificate worth $1000 and first place money of $1350, which made their pay day $2350. Congratulations, Don and Chuck!

The Angler's Choice DelMarVa 2004 schedule has been set and we look forward to yet another great year as we continue to grow. Thanks to all who participated in our events this year and may God bless you and your families.
