Roland Martin may have cut his 'bass fishing" teeth on Maryland's freshwater reservoirs, but it was Baltimore's father/son team of Rich Martin and Dick Martin that was the talk of the town Sunday on the Potomac River.

This first qualifying event of the U.S. Angler's choice DelMarVa division was held out of Virginia's Pohick Bay Regional Park and saw a record field of the best teams the mid-Atlantic can offer. 78 teams were in the water and ready to blast off at 6:15AM when Director Dave Kilby began calling the boat numbers on this unusually sunny, hot and calm day…a rarity, it seems for a DelMarVa event.

The Potomac was at it's best for many of these anglers , as they did not let the discolored water caused by a week of heavy rain alter their game plan. An astounding
9 largemouth bass over 5 pounds made the trip to the scales, but it would take a heftier one than that to win the big bass award. 2003 AOY runners-up Keith Ridgely and Tom Pohuski only brought 2 bass to the scales, but one of them weighed 6.09 pounds and earned this team $780 and the lunker plaque.

Finishing the day in 3rd place and winning $790 was Maryland's Danny Vass and Ken Enders, whose 5 bass limit weighing 16.59 pounds gave them a podium finish, edging out 4th place finishers from Virginia, Chuck Dent and Don Jones by 8/10ths of a pound.

Just ahead of Danny and Ken were Virginia's Thomas Snoddy and Burley Hudgins whose OUTSTANDING catch of 16.66 pounds included just 4 bass! Thomas and Burley boasted 2 hawgs over 5 pounds and lost one of equal size. This dynamic duo, which also competes on the Kerr Super Teams trail, was awarded plaques and $1030 in prize money.

Our champions, Rich and Dick Martin, needed every available ounce of bass they could muster to come out on top. They brought a limit of 5 beautiful pre-spawn bass that totaled 17.82 pounds to best the field and take home the $2055 top prize. Congratulations, Rich and Dick!

Thanks to the many volunteers who helped make this event a success, and especially to the teams of Tony Mann and Sam Steelman, and Walt Ross and Willie Barrett who went out of their way to tow disabled boats back to the ramp in time for weigh-in.
The next DelMarVa event will be held on Lake Anna in Virginia on May16 out of Sturgeon Creek Marina.
