VanClef and Wright Win on the Delta
Oakley CA, Event six brings
yet another hot Delta team to the top spot as VanClef
and Wright vault to there first win of the season. Great
weather greeted the tired Anglers Choice staff after they
hosted the largest tournament in the West in many years
the day before.
VanClef explained, "We started the
day looking to get a quick limit so we decided to start
cranking deep water edges with good visible weed beds
adjacent to them. Fish were either on the top of the edge
or down to 10' and very aggressive." The pair cranked
the fish and had the limit in the boat by 7:30am including
a 4lbr. "We were not having
any problems catching fish but they were cookie cutter
2's," added Van Clef.
After making a couple of moves VanClef
and Wright said, "We figured we would try some deep
stuff with plastics in hopes that we would bump into a
good quality school and start working on getting the better
fish out." The Pair found such a school that was
spread out over a 100-yard stretch of a deep-water bank.
VanClef added, "My partner Bill hooks and lands a
5+ on a zoom worm. We caught several other smaller fish
that culled some of
the 2-pounders. After moving off a little into a deeper
water, Wright again hooked up on another 5+!"
"We just wanted to have a fun day and catch fish
and when we can do this winning seems to come more easily.
Winning by such a narrow margin over the "Bobby Ball
Team" made the victory a little more sweet so thank
you guys for not getting that second toad," said
VanClef jokingly. VanClef also extended a "Thank
You" to Anglers Choice, the sponsors and all that
help make these event possible. VanClef added, "This
organization is definitely on a road to greater success
and I look forward to the future with them."
Barrack and Ball took $910 home for their
second place finish that was anchored by the big fish
of the event of 7.89 pounds. More importantly the pair
edged even closer to the Anglers of the Year race on the
Delta region now within striking distance of Sapp and
Varanai.
Third went to the Dave Church and Vern
Poncia earning them $480 for their efforts, as they weighed
19.91 pounds. Fourth place Nish Yamamoto and Donald Harano
with 17.21 worth $380 dollars. Tom Wardrope and Scott
Houlschuh took fifth ($380) and the team of Don Withney
and Ken Schmitt ($300).
