Some of the best competitive cold water
Delta fishermen arrived at Ladds to cold and rain. 32 teams
signed in as the rain stopped and the wind calmed, however
it was still cold and light fog.
After enjoying some complimentary hot coffee
and doughnuts we blasted off about 7 am. The water was very
calm and no boat traffic, so in to time all the teams were
on there way.
Even with good weather, January can be the
toughest month to fish and we still had over 1/3 of the
field coming in with limits. It took over 13 lbs to get
a check. These guys are good and topping the list in first
place was Chris McCabe of Manteca. Chris had to fish alone
for this tournament and didn't catch his 5th fish until
the end of the day. He said he caught his fish on an S-20
worm with the tail dipped in chartreuse dye in the southern
part of the delta towards Tracy. Chris caught 17.61 lbs
anchored with a 5.54 for a good payday of $1730.
Second place was Scott and Russ Adkins
who also came in with a great limit of cookie cutter 3 plus
pounders for a total of 16.40, their kicker fish was 3.89
lbs. For their effort they landed a check of $905. Scott
and Russ were fishing the White slough-Disappointment slough
section of the Delta. Neither 1st or 2nd place had a problem
passing the polygraph test.
Third place was the very strong team of
Chris VanClef and John Harper with a kicker 5.49 boosting
their total to 15.63 netting a check for $680.
Fourth place went to another good team,
Robert Jones and Ralph Saul with 14.29 lbs snagging a check
for $395. Fifth was one of the delta champion teams, John
Varanai and Steve Sapp coming to the scales with four fish
weighing 13.75 giving them a check for $275. First through
Fifth place also received very nice plaques.
One of the toughest competing teams on
the Delta, Bill Spence Jr. and Chris Raza scooped up 6th
place with a total of 13.27 lbs and $245.
The some what disappointed team of Kenny
Graham and Shawn Marek were first out of the money places,
but they did get the Big Fish, a whopper 7.18 and big fish
money $320, a nice plaque, and a Competitive Edge rod. Good
job by all.
Our next East Delta event will be March
7 out of Ladds. Our TOC will be at Lake Oroville October
20-23 with 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place each getting a new
Bass Cat with a Mercury Opti-Max motor, Motor Guide trolling
motor, and Lowrance Electronics.
