Sunday August 29, 2005 was the last event for points in the US Angler's
Choice East Delta Ladds division. A great day for fishing on the delta
with light winds and warm temperatures. We had 39 teams and after some
coffee and doughnuts they were ready for an early blast-off to avoid the
early wake board traffic. There was a major wake board competition event
which disrupted our normal weigh-in at Dad's point and congested the water
between ladds and downtown Stockton. The rest of the delta had no major
disruptions and the fishing was great. There were 24 limits brought to
the scales and the first two teams fished both the West on Saturday and
the East on Sunday and flip flopping winning positions. Leading the charge
in first place was Vince Hurtado(Modesto) and Jarod Ballardo(Manteca)
with a kicker 5.76 lbs and a total weight of 20.35 lbs, it was a great
bag of fish, which netted them $1900. Second place was taken by the best
ever couples team on the delta, Phil Ganger and Carol Fagundes(both from
Brentwood), they too had a great bag with a 6.04 kicker and total weight
19.43 lbs. and a thousand dollar paycheck. Scooping up third place money
of $815 was Steve Sapp and John Varanai(both from Manteca) coming to the
scales with 18.85 lbs and a 5.14 kicker. Steve and John have been one
of the top teams on the delta for about the last 10 years. Fourth place
went to the most consistent team on the delta this year, Bill Spence Jr.(Livermore)
and Chris Raza(Roseville). They had 18.03 lbs giving them not only $465
but anglers of the year honors. For several months Bill and Chris led
the East, West, and Choice(travelers) division for anglers of the year,
what a team. Coming in fifth and fishing alone, his partner had a prior
engagement, was Gary Thomas(Tracy). Gary did a great job, with no help
he caught 16.18 lbs and netting $395, way to go Gary. Sixth place went
to the godfather of flipping, Dee Thomas(Brentwood) and his partner George
Daganino(Martinez) with a total weight of 13.45 lbs. A kicker fish would
have put them in one of the top spot, but they still took home $320 for
their effort. The seventh spot went to Tracey Sakata and Jirii Sakata(both
from Manteca) with a total weight of 12.71 lbs. All year long Tracey and
Jirii have been knocking on the door, they are a very good team and are
a kicker fish away from being at the top. Big Bass was caught by Bob Bellin(Oakdale)
and his team partner Steve Marino(Salida) did a good job of netting the
7.34 bucket mouth and $390. Good Job. Bob said he caught it on a 7' senko
by Mandeville Island. There were very few fish caught on top water this
weekend, but the flip bite was phenomenal, jigs and plastics won the battle.
The bite is on all over the whole delta, some of the places, Mildred Island,
White and Disappointment Slough, Old River(south), Franks Track, Fourteen
Mile, and Saltly Island.
Last stop the TOC at Oroville where 1st, 2nd ,and 3rd place win Bass Cat
boats with Opti-Max Mercury outboard motors, Lowrance electronics and
Motorguide trolling motors on October 20-23, 2004.
