| A winter series is a new
venture for most of the teams fishing in the Illinois
Winter division. This is the first time that the tournament
angler in this area has had the opportunity to fish competitively
on local waters during the winter months. Many teams are
still in the process of learning the cold water patterns
and techniques that will produce. Most have done some
winter fishing but until now have not had a competition
gage to see where they stack up. With Mother Nature being
in a mid winter mood and offering a take off temperature
of 16 degrees, only the areas most dedicated anglers set
off to put their gained knowledge to use. This division
is most definitely not for the timid or the fair weather
fisherman but the serious angler's who refuse to put their
rods away in October. These guys are dedicated die hard
fisherman!!
The first place team of: Greg Mullins
from Mt. Vernon, IL. and Steve Winkler of Dix, IL. showed
that they may be a step ahead with their second win
in a row. The team brought a five fish limit to the
scales that weighed 15.11lbs. and was also anchored
by big bass of the day weighing 5.09lbs. The team caught
four of their fish early on bandit crank baits and boated
2 fish later on Carolina rigged lizards. They were fishing
in a water depth of six to nine feet. The fish were
all taken off of main lake points and their fish were
in the boat by 11:00am after which the team did not
boat another keeper fish. The team would also like to
thank their sponsors: Midwest Marine, Rend Lake Sporting
Goods, Custom Coach Trailers and Interstate Batteries.
Great Job Guys!!!!
In second place was team of Danny Clark
and Mark Jelly. This team from Mulkeytown, IL. always
seem to be in contention and brought a five fish limit
to the scales weighing 11.75lbs. The team caught all
of their fish on jigs and concentrated on water depths
from ten to fifteen feet. They reported a slow bite
throughout the day. They keyed on high percentage areas
and patiently waited out their bites.
