Mark Jelly and Danny Clark Win Illinois / Winter

Mark Jelly and Danny Clark
As most who have fished Lake of Egypt in the winter have been anticipating the larger stringers are starting to show in January. Historically January and February produce large stringers and will also offer some of the largest bass of the year on this power plant lake. Many are predicting the next three events will bring even better weights to the scales if Mother Nature will cooperate these dedicated anglers. Lake of Egypt offers bass through out the year in the 5 to 8lb range but quoting Danny Clark and Mark Jelley the current point leaders "Late January and February are when the real giants bite" and with rumors of a state record large mouth being shocked up at the lake over the summer everyone is eager to search for it. I would also like to thank our host Tom Samples at Pyramid Acres for enclosing the pavilion and providing heat when needed for the weigh-ins. Again our next event is January 19th. You may fish under the Travelers division and add the Egypt events to your schedule to qualify for the Regional.

In first place is the team of Mark Jelly and Danny Clark both of Ziegler, IL. The team caught their fish drop shotting and Carolina rigging smaller baits. They concentrated their efforts on grass lines in the 12 to 15 foot water range. The team's fish came throughout the day but the bite did seem to peek around 11:00am. They also reported losing one really nice fish during the day that may have challenged for big bass. Their five fish limit tipped the scales at 17.99lbs. Great Job Guy's

In second place was the team of Jack Doan and Ben Doan from Desoto, IL. The team utilized black and blue jigs and crank baits to amass their weight of 16.66lbs. They fished outer weed lines in the 8 to 12 foot range to boat their 5 fish limit. The fish caught in the 8-foot range were taken on crank baits and the deeper fish came off the jigs. The team is sponsored by: Competitive Edge Fishing and R.C. Lures.

Big Bass of the day went to the team of Greg Mullins from Mt. Vernon, IL. and Steve Winkler of Dix, IL. Steve caught the fish by very slowly working a Carolina rigged zoom lizard over weeds in fourteen ft of water. They were fishing in the upper end of the lake away from the warmer water in a water temp of 37 deg. when they caught the fish. The team is sponsored by: Midwest Marine, Rend Lake Sporting Goods, Custom Coach Trailer Sales and Interstate Batteries.
