A cool, wet, dreary day on Lake Egypt equals
some of the best fishing of the year as many limits where
brought to the scales. The weather had been fantastic for
two weeks going into the event but took a dive on this day.
Those who decided to make the trip to the lake after awaking
to weather that only a goose, duck or perhaps some other
type of waterfowl would enjoy where rewarded with a great
day of fishing. Several teams reported catching thirty plus
fish during the day as nine limits where brought to the
scales. Due to the unseasonably warm temperatures leading
up to the event the water temp was in the upper fifties
and even low sixties and fish were being caught on Buzz
Baits, Spooks and other top water baits here in the first
week of January. The lake is notorious for producing its
best fishing on the nastiest and coldest days of the year.
The next winter division tournament is on January 18th.
The first place team of Greg Berner from
Elkville, Illinois and David "Boo" Guill of Royalton,
Illinois used a whole arsenal of baits to boat their keeper
fish. The baits used during the day included crank baits,
spinner baits, jigs, jerk baits and a Lunker Lure buzz bait.
The fish were caught over the grass in water depths of four
feet to fifteen feet and a very aggressive bite was reported.
The team concentrated on main lake windy banks and stayed
in the clearer water. Their five fish limit tipped the scales
at 14.63lbs and earned the team checks totaling $1,110.00.
The team is sponsored by: Jackson Hewitt, Lunker Lure, Triton
Boats, Harrison's Sport Shop, Dunn's Sporting Goods, Pyramid
Acres, Falcon Rods and Solar Bat. Great Job Guy's!!
The second place team of John Barber and
Rob Hicks both of Vergennes, Illinois used a combination
of baits during the day including spinner baits, crank baits
and jigs to catch their fish. They reported that many of
their bites came very shallow in grassy areas of the lake.
The team lost a couple of nicer fish during the day that
could have changed the results on the leader board. The
team was still able to bring a total weight of 14.51lbs
to the scales and take home checks totaling $480.00 for
the second place finish. The team is sponsored by: Harrison's
Sport Shop and Triton Boats.
Big bass of the day went to the team of
Lonnie Bowlin and John Mocaby the fish weighed 5.08lbs and
was caught on the North end of the lake on main lake point
in eight feet of water and the fish was caught on spinner
bait.
