Walters, Ottomano On Top at Kerr Super Teams
What appeared to be a perfect day for fishing…sunny, slight breeze, hot and humid…resulted in the toughest of the 5 qualifying tournaments so far on the U.S. Angler's Choice Kerr Super Teams Division.
14 loyal teams left the ramp at Occoneechee State Park in Clarksville, Virginia at 6:00, just before the blast off of another major tournament a few miles down the lake. As the day progressed, the breeze disappeared and the heat became almost overbearing.
Teams began trickling back to the weigh-in stage as early as 1:30, parched from the heat and weary from a very slow bite.
The bass reportedly had been located by a few teams earlier in the week as deep as 30 feet, holding off of main lake points. Carolina-rigs are the preferred method this time of year for catching these sluggish largemouth.
In what proved to be a very quick weigh-in…only one team was able to produce a 5-bass limit…a few quality bass were still caught. Angler's-of-the-Year leader's Darrell Curl and Jeff Floyd secured 3 rd place with 3 bass weighing 5.86 pounds. They were awarded 2 plaques to add to their 1 st place plaques they received 2 tournaments ago. Good job!
Second place was captured by the team of Jimmy and Darryl Foster.
Their 3 bass weighed 7.78 pounds and they also had the tournaments big
bass which weighed 4.49 pounds. They caught their fish on big worms
rigged Texas style on points. Altogether they took home $990.
Today's champions have come all the way from Pennsylvania
to compete in all 5 Kerr Super Teams events and today made the long trips
pay off for them. Skip Walter's and Dan Ottomano were able to find a creek
with a cool run-off at the back end that produced a much cooler water
temperature and harbored a load of keeper bass. Although no big bass were caught
by this team, they culled 7 bass to gain ounces at a time until
they ended up with a 5-ball limit that weighed 10.01 pounds. A spinnerbait
was their lure of choice but they also caught a few on Brush Hogs. Skip and
Dan were presented the 1 st place plaques and checks totaling $2000.
Congratulations!
