The Anglers Choice Motherlode trail held its first night tournament of the year at Don Pedro June 28/29. Sweltering triple digit heat all week lead many anglers to believe the night fishing would be great. Thirty-four of some of the best Motherlode teams were ready to take advantage of the anticipated top water bite. It's par for course that the bite was somewhat sluggish, this time due to the very warm water and windy conditions. Because of the 6-hour tournament time slot imposed by the DFG, we held a double weigh-in at 1am and 7am. Only 9 teams weighed in limits the first half and just 4 limits the second half. The fish were caught on a large variety of techniques from 1 foot to 20 feet deep. More than half the fish were caught drop shot and split shotting 4" and 6" plastics.

The tough bite made for a long second half and mostly only small fish were biting. Mel Biggs Jr. of Los Banos caught the big bass, a whopping 9.23 lbs, which landed him $340 and with the help of his partner Russ Pierson of Oakdale they reeled in a total of 9 fish weighing 24.61lbs. With that they netted a total of $2100 cash, 3 beautiful plaques, and $1000 Bass Cat Bonus Bucks.

A new team to our circuit, Tim Turner of Kerman and Matt Garrett of Exiter, made a strong effort with 10 fish totaling 21.33lbs. This team cashed a nice check for $955 and 2 beautiful plaques. These beautiful plaques are given for the first 5 places.

Typically found fishing the Angler's Choice Delta regions are the team of Armando Luzuriaga of Campbell and Jimmy Ghiorso of Discovery Bay. This new team to the Motherlode trail brought 8 fish to the scales totaling 20.59 scooping up $776, good for third place and a pair of plaques. I wonder if they caught their fish on frogs?

The strong team of Bobby Rocha of Oakdale and Mike Sander of Modesto took 4th with 9 fish totaling 18.79 and a nice check of $430.

Randy Pierson and Glenn Pierson, both of Oakdale, cashed for the sixth straight time with 9 fish totaling 18.21lb and a good check of $355 and fifth place. Randy and Glenn Pierson have been the most consistent Motherlode team overall for the last couple of years-they're known as the team to beat. Last year Randy took first place in a Pro-Am tournament of champions at Clear Lake winning a new boat. Randy and his father Glenn are no stranger to the title of anglers of the year and this year they did it in Anglers Choice and other team trails.

Rounding out the field of winners was Bruce Harris of Oakdale and Seig Taylor formally of Oakdale with 10 fish weighing 16.98lbs and a check for $270. Oakdale is noted for producing top-notch fishermen. Bruce Harris is a prime example by winning a bassboat in the recent B.A.S.S. event on the delta. The great fishermen of Oakdale are to numerous to mention, but many of them are fishing the Anglers Choice Motherlode region.

Anglers Choice has one more tournament, a night tournament on Don Pedro August 9/10 to finish the season. Our T.O.C. is in October on the Delta and we will be giving away 3 Bass Cat boats with Mercury motors, Lowrance electronics, and Motor Guide trolling motor. We are on the web at www.usanglerschoice.net or call 1-800-360-7112. Motherlode director is Danny Peluso at 209-874-9525.
