Angler's Choice Motherlode at New Melones kicked off the new year with a great tournament. 42 Teams arrived early to what turned out to be some of the best fishing the motherlode has to offer. The weather was perfect, the lake is rising, and the fish were biting. Many of the teams reported catching multiple limits There were 32 limits with a total of 187 fish being caught and an average weight of 1.60 lbs. Some fish were caught from 5 to 20 feet deep, but most fish were 30 to 60 feet deep. Brown or green pumpkin jigs 3/8 to 3/4 ounce dragging and hopping on the bottom was best. Dart heads with brown tubes or your favorite color zipper or brush hog was also working well. With more tournaments coming to New Melones, no one was willing to share location.

The top weight of the event was caught on brown and green jigs by Bill Looper and Steve McCann of Oakdale. They had 3 good fish in their limit for a total weight of 13.88 lbs and reeled in a whopping $2045 for the effort. Second went to gold medallist skier turned gold medallist fisherman Kyle Rasmussen and Joe Menzes of Angels Camp with a total of 13.10 lbs anchored by a 4.77 big fish which landed them $1502.

Another well known fisherman, BASS Delta champion Robert Lee and his dad Dennis brought 11.22 lbs to the scales and scooped up $862. Fourth place went to the staff team Bob Bellin and Steve Marino, who are currently the points leaders, with 11.20 lbs just .02 lbs from 3rd netting them $475. Stealing fifth with 10.36 lbs, just .01 lbs over 6th, was fishing guide Johnny Chiarpotti and Joe Bruce, a local favorite, netted them $400. Eking into sixth with 10.35 lbs was the team of Norval Garringer and Jeff Johnson giving them a check for $315. A new team to Angler's, David Permenter and Aaron Cole placed seventh with 9.62 and took home $295. Last in the money at eighth place was the competitive team of Tom Machado and George Amorin with 9.41 lbs good for $240. Great job by all.

Next tournament for the Motherlode is February 28 at Don Pedro. There's still plenty of time to join the circuit and make the TOC at Oroville, where we will be giving a Bass Cat and Mercury Opti-Max for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Call Danny Peluso @ 209-874-9525.
