1st Place: Wayne Boyd of Rome,
Georgia, a Salesman for J Supply Company, and Lance Wiseman
of Cedar Bluff, who works for Simpson Grocery as a Budweiser
Distributor, fished very shallow using a crankbait to catch
their two largest bass of the day. When the big eye in the
sky came out, they changed patterns to flippin a Hoppy's black
and blue jig in the creek channels off the main river. The
fish were staging waiting for the lake to raise enough for
them to move up into the creeks to bed. The team caught fish
all day long and culled 15 more bass in the three pound range
on their way to filling their 5 fish limit weighing 20.59
lbs. For this great catch, they took home a check for $1410.
2nd Place: Lynn Johnson, owner
of Johnson Food Giant, and Steve Body, with Supermarket Design
& Maintenance, both of Gadsden, started the morning trying
to defend their 2003 Anglers of the Year Title. The team struggled
most of the morning trying to figure the bass out and didn't
boat their first fish until almost noon. The "Dream Team"
found a creek with warmer water and located their fish along
a 100-foot stretch of bank. They flipped True Life Jigs with
a Prowler Pro Craw Chunk trailer using 30lb test line on their
Kistler Helium Flippin Stick rods. Nitro Boats and Mercury
Outboard Motors also sponsor the team.
3rd Place: Krystal Fishing Team
members Jerry Lackey, who retired from Fort McClellan and
is from Alexandria, and Jim Shank, Operations Manager for
Griggs Foods Inc. (DBA Krystal Restaurants) from Manchester,
Georgia got off to a slow start. With the water temperature
at 40.1 degrees, their Spinner Bait pattern that had been
working didn't produce, so they started working a shallow
running crankbait extremely slow and it produced their first
three keeper fish. As the day warmed up they flipped isolated
wood with a black/blue Randy Bobo Jig to finish out their
limit, and cull a few to boot. Their limit weighed 15.30 lbs.
They are also one of our Team Trail Sponsors.
Danny Rodriguez, who is a mechanic
at Alexandria Muffler and Brake Service, and Scott Chitwood,
with Advance Auto Parts, caught the Big Bass, which weighed
in at 6.20 lbs. They won $320, and were also presented with
the Rat L Trap Award for the biggest fish of the tournament
caught on a Rat L Trap. The Team of Jerry Cheatwood and John
Benefield, of Cedartown, Georgia, were the lucky team to win
the Frog Togg Foul Weather suits donated by Will Fowler, the
owner of Frog Togg and a new sponsor for this years team trails.
Thanks to our Team Sponsors and
supporters this year: The Carl Black Auto Group of Kennesaw,
Georgia, Jim Shank and the Krystal Fishing Team, Doug and
Joe Campbell of Waterfront Tackle, Guntersville Boat Mart
and the Hampton Inns of Guntersville, Will Fowler and Frog
Toggs, First Choice Marble, Al's Top Shop and Rat L Trap.
Also, special thanks to Randy Swells, the new owner of Weiss
Lake Landing, for hosting the tournaments on Weiss Lake this
year, and for making the teams feel welcome and appreciated.
Coming up on March 20th is the
first of the new Neely Henry Super Teams tournaments, sponsored
by Gadsden Parks and Recreation. It has a 1st Place Guaranteed
Payout of $2,500. Participating in the Super Team Events could
not only help you qualify for the Championship this October
6th - 9th on Neely Henry, but it will also give you some valuable
experience on the lake. You can qualify for the S.E. Regional
by fishing the Choice Division, which means that you can fish
any tournament in the S. E. Region and we will take your best
7 tournaments, or you can qualify through any of the other
team trails in the S.E. Region. So come out and support the
City of Gadsden, a city that has always appreciated the Anglers.
Come and spend time in their city and on the beautiful Coosa
River.
