Carver And Jordan Win 1st Ever Four Corners Event

Mike Carver and Wade Jordan

Friday night, January 31st, found us all at KB Dillon's restaurant for our first ever Angler's Choice/Four Corners region registration meeting and draw. There were lots of stories (lying) flying about what was going on at Morgan Lake as far as patterns and bait selection. We had anticipated 15 to 18 teams for our first event but were impressed when 20 of the best teams from the region decided to show up and complete for the largest purse in our area in recent history. We had 3 teams (Triplett/Leeling), (Bennett/Brinkhoff) and (Olds) come down from the Denver, Co. area and made a good showing. The team of (Bishop/Lopez) from Grand Junction, Co. was also trying to take some of the pot back up North. It has happened before but not this time. I am sure that these teams will earn their share of the money before it is all over.

The morning dawned with the normal fog cloud covering the lake so it was idle time until it lifted about 2 hours later. Most of the first timers just started outside of the launch area where they had a point of reference and worked around from there. Weather was too nice as most of the field struggled but as always someone always figures out what it will take to get a bite.

The team of Jordan/Carver brought in a 5 fish limit weighing 18.01lbs for first place worth $1120. The rumor is they fished the dam with plastics and crank baits to get the win. This is a team that will be tough all season with their experience fishing the local waters. Brian Myers, (fishing alone) was 2nd with 16.26lbs good for $560. Brian found a kicker (6.54lbs) to anchor his bag which was good enough for BIG FISH of the tournament. It paid $200 and was caught on a rattle bait. 3rd went to the team of Johnson/Cottom with 16.21lbs caught on plastics (Senkos) and reaction baits. They won $265 for their effort. 4th was held by Crask/Countess out of Durango, Co. and paid $255. My partner and I watched as Jerry Hansen's dad caught fish after fish but all were released as being too small, according to Jerry. It wasn't until later that it became clear what was Jerry's intent, he was in the Lucky Losers pot and he figured he had it won if only Dick would quit catching fish.

All in all, we had a great tournament with a good bunch of fishermen. I want to thank everyone for coming and a special thanks goes to the teams from way out of town. We paid out over $3200 in entry/option money and started on our journey to the Big Show in Clear Lake, Cal. (Oct. 15-18, 2003)

I want to say thanks to Jerry and Dick Hansen and Homer Pirkey for all the great help at the registration and weigh-in. Also last but not least, the staff at KB Dillon's, without their donation of the meeting room and great service, it would be a struggle to get things done in a timely manner.

Our next event is March 22nd and registration (not mandatory) will be at KB Dillon's from 5:00PM till 7:00PM on Friday night, the 21st. Anyone wanting to register early and not able to be there Friday can send in their entry along with the proper amount of money. I will draw their launch position for them. All entries at the ramp will fill launch positions starting after the last number drawn Friday night. Everyone needs to be at the ramp at least 45 minutes before dawn, check local sources or call / e-mail me for time. Tell a friend about these events. There is still time to get started. The more entries we have, the more teams qualify for Clear Lake.
