The 1st of May found Navajo
Lake less than great unless you were the team of Gerhardt
and Crites. The 16 teams that showed up at KB Dillon's
on Friday night were more optimistic than the results
that were recorded that first Saturday in May. It has
just been one of those years where the weather and rising
water levels have wreaked havoc on the patterns that
were found during pre-fish. Navajo is starting to fish
like it is in its summer pattern but it is only May
and should be in the middle of the spawn. Nevertheless,
as in most tournaments it seems, someone always finds
a way to catch enough fish to win.
That team was Dave Gerhardt and Russell Crites with
11.18lbs and the Big Bass, a largemouth at 5.10lbs.
They had a nice smallmouth in the bag of 5 fish and
took home $990 for 1st place plus another $160 for Big
Bass. Second place went to the team of David Perry and
Scott Skelton with 5 fish weighing 7.66lbs. They culled
fish most of the day with just ounces making the difference
in each fish. They used an arsenal of baits from spinnerbaits,
cranks, tubes, and jigs to fool enough fish for a check
worth $495. Wade Jordan and Mike Carver secured third
place. Their 4 fish weighed 6.60lbs, which was worth
$265. This team will have to be considered a favorite
on the next two tournaments when the series moves to
their home lake of McPhee. First team out of the checks
was 4th place team of Chris Kinley and Ben Crites with
4 fish weighing 5.78lbs. Ben is the son of Russell Crites
and there seems to be some good-natured rivalry between
them. Too bad Ben and Chris missed a tournament or there
could be a great race for AOY between them also.
The race for Angler of
the Year is really heating up with 4 teams separated
by 8 points. There are 2 events left and if the 4 teams
don't falter, it should be a great race till the end.
There are 14 teams eligible still to qualify either
by points or by Wild Card. There will be 8 teams qualify
by points at the last event. The 2 teams not qualifying
by points at that time but are the 2 highest finishers,
with 6 events or more fished, in that event will be
the Wild Card teams.
The next tournament will
be held on McPhee Lake out of Dolores, Co. on June 5th.
This should be a great time to be on McPhee. The water
should be rising and warming, which should get the spawn
started. There will be fish caught flippin', crankin'
and drop-shottin'.
If there are any anglers out there that want to experience
a bass tournament environment without the pressure,
find a friend and show up. All events are 2 member teams
that you pick. There is no team circuit going today
that gives 3 boats away at their Championship other
than Anglers Choice. You can start now to get a feel
of the competition and be ready for next year's run
for the championship. Get on the website www.www.usanglerschoice.net
