Tuesday of the week leading up to the event nearly the entire
lake was ice covered. Three days of temps in the forties had
melted some of the ice but with the lack of wind it would
only freeze up again over night with temps in the low teens
"would there even be a tournament was the question"
Saturday the temps again reached the mid forties and where
accompanied with a breeze which really helped break up the
ice. Those who practiced Saturday found the bite to be extremely
tough and many elected to stay at home and do battle on another
day due to these conditions. With all the coves still froze
and huge sections of the lake restricted because of ice 36
of some of the areas best anglers still decided to make the
trip to the lake and launched there boats on a balmy 22-degree
morning.
The first place team of: Tony
Curtis from Pleasant Hill, MO. and Jason Weast of Mack's Creek,
MO. Bested seventeen other teams with a stringer nothing short
of amazing. The team reported busting through about 150 yards
of some heavy ice to get to their fish. Jason reported that
the team had been catching fish in this area for over a month
and won an event there in January. The area was thick with
gizzard shad and was near the 35-mile marker. The team used
Lucky Craft baits and jigs to amass a winning weight that
tipped the scales at an astonishing 26.35lbs! The bag was
also anchored by the Lunker Lure Big Bass of the day weighing
6.50lbs. The team took home checks totaling $1,380.00 for
the day. The team is sponsored by: F'n A Marine. Great Job
Guy's!!
Second place goes to the team
of Shawn Kowal from Linn Creek, MO. and Casey McTaggart of
Troy, IL. The team concentrated on main lake points in water
depths of 12 to fifteen feet and their bait of choice was
a Mega Bass stick bait. The team had a five fish limit with
a total weight of 10.43lbs. The day's catch earned the team
checks totaling $560.00 for the place. The team is sponsored
by: Bass Cat boats, Mercury Outboards, Proguide batteries
and 42 boats and more.
Third place goes to the 2003
points champions Stan Snelson and Gary Phelps from Rolla,
MO. The team caught their fish within six miles of the take
off area. The fish were taken on Lucky Craft baits and jigs.
A transitional change from chunk rock to pea gravel seemed
to be key as all of their fish came from this type of area.
The team brought three fish to the scales weighing 8.12lbs.
Stan and Gary received checks totaling $370.00 for the day.
The team is sponsored by: Bass Cat boats
