Jeff Avery and Pat Henley won their second consecutive South Arkansas Angler’s Choice bass tournament May 30th on D’Arbonne Lake. The team, from Eldorado, only landed four fish but their weight of 12.35 pounds was enough to claim the first place check for $1000. Their biggest bass weighed 5.19 pounds and was the big bass for the event which paid them another $160.
Finishing in second place with five fish that weighed 8.39 pounds, were Ronnie Walthall and David Ponder. Their efforts were rewarded with a check for $480. Third place went to Grant Koldem and Steven Bates for their limit that weighed 7.52 pounds and paid $160. Most of the teams reported a good early bite on Chug Bugs and Buzz Baits, but high wind’s soon ended that and things got tough. Some fish were caught on jigs and Carolina rigs.
With three tournaments left for the year the Angler’s of the Year race is heating up. Avery and Henley moved into the lead just ahead of Scott Tanner and Buddy Norris. Richard Perdue and Jake Deeds are in third only 1/100th of a point behind Scott and Buddy. Also still in contention are Greg Beaver and Joe Hicks in forth and Steve McKennon and Ryan McKennon in fifth place.
The next South Arkansas event is scheduled for June 26th at Lake Erling. Launch site and weigh in will be at the state park.
