January 19, 2002 Bayou
Black, LA
Foret
and Lowenthal Win South
Louisiana Opener
Twenty-six
teams braved the near freezing temperatures in Bayou
Black on the morning of our first 2003 tournament. Layered
clothing and ice-sheeted boats were definitely a hindrance
to the anglers in the early morning hours. But, around
mid-morning the sun had burned off the fog and it turned
out to be a beautiful day with bluebird skies.
I
had been forewarned by Bobby Breaux, owner of Bayou
Black marina, that the fishing would be difficult due
to muddy waters and high pressure. I became a believer
when our first boat pulled into the marina an hour early
with empty live wells. His theory was proven when many
teams weighed in only one fish.
Blake
Foret and Marc Lowenthal, returning Angler's Choice
members, beat the odds with a 5 fish limit weighing
15.13 lbs. Their efforts earned them first place and
$1220. Brent Bonadona and Ken Shermon, new members to
our circuit, brought in the only other 5 fish stringer.
Their 9.40 lbs took second place and $610. Not far behind
were Dave and Derek Mong, also returning members, who
were awarded $400 for 3 fish weighing 8.48 lbs. Fourth
place and big bass went to Glynn Breaux (returning)
and Shawn Hebert (new member). They have $540 to deposit
thanks to their beautiful 5.29 lunker. Our 2002 Anglers
of the Year, Keith and Kirby Plaisance drew fifth place
and a check for $245, with 2 bass weighing 4.41 lbs.
Our
resident cook, Yvette Granier, was kept quite busy serving
up chicken and smoked sausage gumbo and potato salad.
Many thanks go out to Denise and Tommy Keller for donating
the gumbo ingredients, to Yvette for cooking it, and
to Keith Plaisance for the potato salad. Judging from
what remained in the pots, everyone must have enjoyed
it immensely.
I'd
like to send a huge welcome to all new members. It was
a joy to meet you all. It was wonderful to see my friends
who returned. Congratulations to all who placed. And
last, but not least, many thanks to Bobby for his beautiful
facility.
Until
February 23,
Cayce
