The Southern Illinois division
kicked off the 2004 season at Lake Egypt. Forty-two boats
launched and took off out of Pyramid acres marina. The bite
had been reported to be good but the recent heavy rains had
muddied up some of the lake and by Saturday the cold front
had past and the bite had toughened up a bit. The morning
seemed to be productive for most but after 10:00am the sun
was in full force with bluebird skies making for a challenging
second half of the day. Even on a tough day the lake still
produces good fish and with many of the best angler's in Southern
Illinois present at this event it would take a good bag to
win on this day.
The first place team of: Greg Berner from Elkville, IL. and
David "Boo" Guill of Royalton, IL. bested a strong
field with a total weight of 16.52lbs. The team stayed in
main lake areas that were still clear and not affected as
much from the earlier rains. They found their fish to be shallow,
in water depths ranging from one to five feet in depth. All
of the their fish were located in or around the grass that
is abundant on the lake. Windy banks also played a key role
as the team was throwing unique spinner bait made by Lunker
Lure called a Vibratron. The windy banks, grass, wind and
the Vibratron spinner bait was a winning combination as team
had a limit in the boat by 8:30am. They went on to catch 8
keepers total during the day with their best five earning
them checks totaling $1,830.00. The team is sponsored by:
Jackson Hewitt, Harrison's Sport Shop, Solar Bat, Triton Boats,
Dunn's Sporting Goods, Falcon Rods and Lunker Lure/Hawg Caller.
Great Job Guys!!
Second Place goes to the team
of Derek "Duke" Jenkel from Pinkneyville, IL. and
Jeff Atchison of Ina, IL. The team used an arsenal of baits
to boat their five keepers consisting of spinner baits Carolina
rigs, jigs and crank baits. The average water depth they concentrated
on was anywhere from six to ten feet. The team had a total
weight of 16.28lbs, which was anchored by a healthy 6.02lb
beauty that also captured big bass honors for the day. The
team takes home checks totaling $1,540.00 for their day on
the water. The team is sponsored by: Cotton Mouth Lures, and
Svanda Chevrolet.
Third Place goes to the team
of: Paul Seiler from Cambria, IL. and Rob Seiler of Joliet,
IL. This father and son team focused their efforts in deeper
water depths ranging from ten to fifteen feet. They had their
five fish limit by 9:30am and then struggled but was able
to boat one of their larger fish of the day around 2:00pm
which allowed them to cull. All of their fish were caught
on jigs that were fish either in the grass or around it. The
team had a total weight of 14.28lbs, which earned them checks
totaling $710.00 for the day.
