A week of temps in the upper
seventies and fantastic fishing at Kincaid Lake abruptly came
to an end Friday as a major cold front pushed into the area.
Angler's that had a chance to visit the lake during the week
were reporting that it would take over twenty pounds to place
in the upcoming event if conditions held. Unfortunately they
did not, teams awoke to temps in the mid thirties and a stiff
15 to 20mph winds as they headed to the lake on Sunday morning.
The take off temp was 35deg. and as the day wore on the contestants
were first greeted with a mix of sleet and rain. Then around
11:30 it turned into a full-fledged thunderstorm and did not
quit raining until after the weigh-in was over at which time
the temp had reached a balmy 40deg.
The first place team of Greg
Ellett from Jacob, IL. and Bill Griffiths of Willisville,
IL. adapted to the changing conditions. The team had been
on a shallow water pattern leading up to the event but soon
realized that they would have to make a change. The fish that
were being caught in two to three feet of water either moved
out or were not interested in feeding. The team used their
local knowledge of the lake and moved to an area with steeper
banks and deeper water. They started concentrating their efforts
on water depths ranging from 8 to 12 feet using black and
blue jigs. The bank that was most productive for the team
had a lot of chunk rock on it and also a few stumps however
the fish did not really seem to be relating to one or the
other. The decision was a correct one however as the team
caught seven keeper fish during the day with their best five
weighing 20.29lbs and anchored by a hefty 5.06lb largemouth.
The team received a check for $960.00 and $1,000.00 Bass Cat
bonus bucks bringing their total winnings to $1,960.00 for
the day. The team is sponsored by: Dunn's Sporting Goods,
Matuzo Lures, and Harrison's Sport Shop. Great Job Guy's!!!!!
The second place team of Duke
Jenkel from Pinkneyville, IL. and Jeff Atchison of Ina, IL.
fished most of the day in shallow water depths of 5 foot or
less. The fish that they boated seemed to be relating to stumps
and lay downs. The team used black and blue cottonmouth jigs
to boat their fish and reported a very subtle bite. The team
broke off two fish during the day and also lost a keeper fish
at the boat but was still able to bring four fish to the scales
weighing 12.02lbs capturing the second place position and
winning $450.00. The team is sponsored by: Cotton Mouth Lures
and Savanda Chevrolet.
In third place is the team of
Greg Berner from Elkville, IL. and David "Boo" Guill
of Royalton, IL. was only able to capitalize on two keeper
bites during the day but they were good ones. The teams two
fish tipped the scales at 11.00lbs. The fish were both caught
shallow, one was caught on crank bait and the big bass of
the tournament was caught over a beaver hut on a spinner bait.
The big fish weighed a very healthy 6.56lbs and earned the
team a total of $375.00 for the place and big bass. The team
is sponsored by: Triton, Dunn's Sporting Goods, Falcon Rods,
Lunker Lure, Pyramid Acres and Harrison's Sport Shop
