Twenty-five teams arrived at
the Lusk Creek ramp on the Smithland Pool ready for a 6am
take off. Unfortunately the scattered fog that many awoke
to turned into a very dense fog about half an hour before
take off. Teams were held back until just before 8:30am when
conditions became acceptable for a safe launch. The weigh-in
was moved up to 3:30pm to compensate for most of the lost
time. After the fog lifted the temperature rose quickly and
was accompanied with humidity that seemed to be thick enough
to cut through. Teams that were to do well on this day would
have to work extremely hard under the tough conditions.
The first place team of: Phil
Rose and Mike Trexler of Murphysboro, IL. bested the field
with a five fish limited weighing 9.70lbs. The team culled
through seven keeper fish during the day with the largest
weighing 2.90lbs. The team used white spinner baits to amass
their winning weight. The teams game plan "that they
stuck too" was go to an area that they knew they could
get a limit of smaller fish quickly then head back to Lusk
Creek and fish for a couple bigger bites. It worked perfectly
as the team received checks totaling $1,230.00 and Bass Cat
bonus bucks totaling $1,000.00 bringing the days earning to
$2,230.00 Great Job Guy's!!
The second place team of: Frank
Hiller and Stan Schwartz both of Carbondale, IL. also brought
a five fish limit to the scales weighing 9.17lbs. The team
utilized plastics and jigs along lay downs and other cover
in water depths from two to four feet. They concentrated on
the creeks that feed the pool as they found the main river
to be to muddy on this day. The team reported catching about
ten other keepers during the tournament but was just unable
to get a bigger bite.
Third place was unavailable
for comment.
