Jack and
Ben Doan Win Ohio River
Hot, humid, and sticky, were
just three of the lesser adjectives used to describe the day.
With temperatures at or near 100 degrees and high humidity
levels creating heat indexes near 110 degrees anglers had
to work nearly as hard to stay cool as they did to solve the
tough bite. The river has been a tough one to figure out this
year partly caused by the heavy precipitation the upper Ohio
River Valley has been receiving keeping the river up, muddy
and moving most of the summer. There always seems to be many
keepers brought to the scales but the absence of the main
river bite during these summer months has meant fewer big
fish being brought to the scales. Even with the high temps
there was no dead fish weighed as everyone did a great job
of keeping there live wells running and or treated. The holding
tanks were also iced down and treated before weigh-in time
to aid in the healthy release of all fish brought to the scales.
The first place team of: Jack
and Ben Doan from Desoto, IL. beat the heat and the tough
conditions to bring a five fish limit to the scales weighing
9.07lbs. and take the win. The team reported catching around
twenty keepers through out the day on crank baits and jigs.
The fish were caught in water depths ranging from 3 to 10
feet. The larger fish of the day seemed to be suspended around
stumps in the deeper water. Jack reported the fish would hit
the jig on the drop around these deeper stumps. The team takes
home $1,210.00 for the place plus $1,000.00 in Bass Cat bonus
bucks bringing the days earnings to $2,210.00 The team is
sponsored by Competitive Edge fishing. Great Job Guys!!
The second place team of Buck
Hood and Dan Spinnie both of Coulterville, IL. also brought
a five fish limit to the scales weighing 8.43lbs. Their stringer
was anchored by a 3.47lb. large mouth which claimed big bass
honors for the day. The team went to an unnamed creek and
traveled several miles back. The team reported catching around
ten keepers during the day on a mix of baits. They did report
that the big bass of the day was fooled by a pop-r. The team
received $610.00 dollars for the place plus an additional
$230 for big bass bringing the days pay to $840.00
Third place went to the team
of Dave Foreman from Effingham, IL. and Dave Pontious of Watson,
IL. The team culled through nine keeper fish during the day
to amass a total weight of 8.19lbs. When asked what the team
did to catch their fish the first reply was fish their guts
out, keep the baits in the water and fish extremely hard.
The fish were caught in creeks on crank baits and worms with
about half coming off of each. For the days hard work the
team takes home two checks totaling $390.00
