The
second event for the US U.S. Angler's Choice Tournament Trails
Southern Oklahoma Team Division was greeted with rain at take-off
that finally stopped when the weigh-in was over. The fish
must have liked the rain all but one team had fish and several
teams said they caught fish all day. Lake Texoma had rose
from resent rains until it was at normal lake level. 50 bass
were weighed in weighing 121.98 lbs with an average weight
of 2.43 lbs. Six five fish limits were brought to the scales.
Previous
Angler of the year David Williams, Broken OK and Shannon Cogburn,
Bethel OK, were among the last to weigh-in. Williams and Cogburn
took the lead with five bass weighing 17.31 lbs and remained
there to receive $925.00 for first place. Williams and Cogburn
fished the north end of the lake above the bridge. They had
a limit by 8:30am and culled their last bass at 2:00pm. After
fishing tournaments on Lake Texoma for about ten years, this
was the first time they had been able to cull. Williams and
Cogburn were slow fishing a white 3/8oz spinnerbait made by
Cogburn and a 3/8oz Stanley blue/black jig. They fished brush
and logs in shallow muddy water. When Williams was asked what
he thought about the weather and the lake he replied good,
another angler said how can you say that with all this rain,
Williams said if the weather hadn't rained we might not have
caught our fish.
James
Morgan, Marietta OK, and Buddy Boydston, Ardmore OK, the winners
of the Lake Murray tournament, were the second team to weigh-in.
They took the lead with a five fish limit weighing 16.43 lbs,
which included a big bass weighing 5.10 lbs. Morgan and Boydston
caught fish all day fishing rocks in the north end of the
lake, the same area of the lake as Williams and Cogburn. The
two teams watched each other catch fish all day. Morgan and
Boydston slow fished with ½oz chartreuse and white
Diamond Back Spinnerbaits and a crank bait in two to four
feet of off color dingy, 55-degree water. Morgan and Boydston
received $455.00 for second place and $140.00 for the big
bass of the tournament. The big bass was caught on a crank
bait about 12:00noon.
US U.S. Angler's Choice Southern Oklahoma Team would like to thank
Catfish Bay Gas Dock for the weigh-in and take-off site, the
Marina Mart for the registration site, Lakeside Motel for
headquarters and KKAJ 95.7FM for being the official radio
station for the Texoma event.
The
next Southern Oklahoma Team event will be April 20, on Lake
Eufaula going out of Eufaula Cove. Ken's Pizza will be the
registration site. The Loyal Inn (1-800-450-6576) will be
headquarters. KFOX 102.5 FM will be the official radio station
for the Eufaula event.
To
qualify for the US U.S. Angler's Choice Team championship, a team
is required to fish at least five of the seven tournaments
in a season, so it's not to late to start fishing the Southern
Oklahoma Team circuit and make the championship. For a team
to qualify for the Championship they must fish the Eufaula
event and the four remaining events of the season. The team's
championship is a no entry fee event. First place is two fully
rigged Bass Cat Boats with a Mercury Motor, and a MotorGuide
Trolling Motor. 2nd place is one fully rigged Bass Cat Boat.
The date of the team's championship is Oct. 4-5, on the Red
River at Shreveport, LA.
