Symonds
And McCollum Win Sardis
Jay Symonds and Kelly McCollum
both of Coalgate OK won the Sardis event with five bass
weighing 11.48 pounds, which included the big bass of
the event. Symonds and McCollum caught bass all day
fishing weeds off the bank in the north end of the lake
with white spinnerbaits. Symonds and McCollum's big
bass only weighed 3.87 pounds but that was big enough
to earn $245.00, plus they received $1050 for first
place and $220.00 for the angler's bonus side pot for
total winnings of $1515.00. Symonds and McCollum moved
into first place in the angler of the year race, for
the second time this season, with 431.20 total points.
Second place and $545.00 went to Charles Keene and Brad
Tolbert, both of Durant OK, for four bass weighing 10.77
pounds. They also received $130.00 from the angler's
bonus side pot. Keene and Tolbert fished grass beds
in Anderson Creek in stained 83-degree water. They caught
their bass in the morning on white and black buzz baits
and in the afternoon they were flipping salt and pepper
Strike King tubes.
The husband and wife team of Johnny and Jeannie Douglas
finished in third place and won $450.00 plus $90.00
from the angler's bonus side pot. Johnny and Jeannie
fished weeds in shallow murky water in the main lake
using Berkley blue fleck worms. Tracker Marine of OKC
and D & D Contractors of Shawnee OK sponsor them.
Sardis again proved it
can get rough quick. The day started out calm till about
9:00am when a north wind hit with gusts of 20 miles
and it turned cloudily. There were four-foot breakers
for a while, then about two hours later the winds calmed
down and it returned to sunny skies. There were 74 bass
brought to the scales weighing 141.66 pounds for an
average weight of 1.91 pounds per bass. Four teams had
a five fish limit.
Homer and Spencer McAlester
of Denison TX received a $50.00 check from local sponsor
J & M Marine for having the smallest bass of the
event a 1.12 pounder. Can't wait to see what J &
M Marine will do for the next event it's a mystery.
